Can you wear black to a wedding?
Yes, in almost all cases now - black is standard for evening and city weddings. Skip it only for strict traditional or some cultural ceremonies.
The old rule against black (mourning association) is effectively dead in Western weddings. Black cocktail dresses and dark suits are now among the most common guest outfits, particularly for evening, urban, and fall or winter weddings. The exceptions that remain: some traditional Southern and religious ceremonies where black still reads somber, and weddings where the couple has specified a color palette or theme that black would clash with. Daytime garden weddings are the other soft case - black is allowed but lighter colors suit the register better. When in doubt, black with festive accessories (a colored wrap, statement jewelry) splits the difference perfectly.
